November 7, 2002

The Michigan Public Service Commission today approved a settlement agreement and granted Midwest Energy Cooperative authority to reconcile its 2001 power supply costs and revenues collected from its customers.  Under the settlement agreement, Midwest is authorized to refund $580,190 that it overcollected from its customers in the Fruit Belt Division through a credit on customers' electric bills.  Midwest is authorized to refund $11,909 to its residential and seasonal customers and $23,782 to its large commercial customers in its Southeastern Division through a credit on customers' electric bills.   Finally, Midwest is granted authority to collect $1,855 from its small commercial customers in its Southeastern Division through a surcharge on customers' electric bills.  Today's order balances allowable power supply costs and revenues collected from its customers between January 1 and December 31, 2001.

Midwest's residential customers in the Fruit Belt Division using 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month will see a credit of about $4.98.  Midwest's residential customers in the Southeastern Division using 500 kWh of electricity per month will see a credit of about $0.65.  Individual customer refunds will vary, based on electric use.

MPSC and Midwest negotiated the settlement agreement.

Midwest is headquartered in Cassopolis and provides electric service to about 27,000 Michigan customers.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Consumer and Industry Services.
