smart grid
Smart Grid refers to the process of integrating modern technology into the existing electrical power grid to improve reliability, power quality and efficiency. This process will enable each component of the grid the ability to "talk" and "listen" in order to improve electricity delivery from the utility companies to consumers.

Additional information contained on our Smart Grid 101 and Consumer Education pages will provide a quick overview of the current electric grid and the envisioned benefits associated with this transition.

Michigan smart grid related milestones:

Low-Income Energy Efficiency Fund (LIEFF) grants from the MPSC:

  • 2002: Michigan Economic Development Corporation and NextEnergy project focused on the design, construction, and installation of a microgrid system. The NextEnergy Microgrid Power Pavilion was completed in 2005 and is a working laboratory system of multiple power sources of different sizes and technologies to serve aggregated electrical and thermal loads through distributed generation.
  • 2005: NextEnergy project focused on the development of an interactive fleet user's website to determine and evaluate fuel economy improvements and emission reductions for various types of powertrain technologies, and alternative fuel vehicles.
  • 2008: University of Michigan/General Motors Corporation/DTE Energy Company project focused on a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) pilot to study PHEVs as a Michigan economic development catalyst, the near term vehicle-utility interface, the mid/long-term vehicle utility interface, and the environmental and electric utility system impacts of PHEVs.
  • Commission orders in Case No. U-15278:

  • 2007: Commencing proceeding to implement smart grid infrastructure initiatives.
  • 2008: Initiates collaborative on smart grid infrastructure.
  • Smart meter deployment in Michigan:

  • DTE Energy Company has approximately 650,000 smart meters installed at the end of 2011.
  • Consumers Energy's business plan begins meter deployment in the summer of 2012.
