The Certified Local Government Program was established to enhance local government preservation efforts by increasing public interest and involvement in preservation activities.

To become a CLG, a government must, at the very least, have a local historic district commission with design review control over established or planned locally designated historic districts. While certification does not guarantee funding, it may increase the likelihood of receiving a Historic Preservation Grant.
