FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Governor Granholm and MSHDA Announce Over $10.1 Million
In 34 Statewide Grants

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm together with Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Executive Director Keith Molin has announced over $10 million in grants to 34 cities, counties, and nonprofit organizations to help minimize vacant, abandoned and blighted property left behind in neighborhoods as a result of the foreclosure crisis.  The funding is provided through the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) as part of the competitive grant process.
“By eliminating blight, we will help make neighborhoods safer for citizens and more inviting for businesses and economic investments,” Granholm said.  “Establishing thriving and healthy communities is a critical part of our plan to transform Michigan’s economy and create jobs for our workers.”
This is the second round of NSP funds distributed in Michigan. The first included $9 million in initial awards to 17 cities across the state.  The initial funding supported the redevelopment of 116 residential units and the demolition of 276 blighted units throughout the state. In addition the Michigan Land Bank will use $10 million to demolish state-owned blighted properties. To date $30 million of Michigan’s $98 million NSP allocation has been awarded to projects.
“The improvements planned with the NSP funds can’t help but breathe new life into these cities and prosperity will start to grow and thrive,” Molin said. “The ‘sense of place’ that develops is key to Michigan’s ability to retain and attract that much-needed young knowledge worker of the future.”
MSHDA’s vision in the 21st century is to improve the quality of life for all Michigan residents and create vibrant communities by focusing on providing safe, affordable housing through homeownership and rental programs; ending homelessness; and revitalizing neighborhoods and downtowns. MSHDA’s loans and operating expenses are financed through the sale of tax-exempt and taxable bonds and notes to private investors, not from state tax revenues. For information on this and other MSHDA programs, visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/mshda.
