December 3, 2008 - Traffic Fatalities Increase During 2008 Thanksgiving Weekend

Contact:  Sgt. Jill McKelvey, (517) 336-6121

LANSING. Twelve people lost their lives in nine traffic crashes during the 2008 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to figures compiled by the Michigan State Police (MSP). Last year, there were 11 traffic deaths during the Thanksgiving weekend.

Of the 12 victims, one was known to be restrained by a safety belt, and alcohol was a known factor in one of the nine crashes.

"We are disappointed to see an increase in traffic fatalities," stated Capt. Robert R. Powers, Jr., commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division. "As we continue into the 2008 holiday season, we encourage motorists to drive responsibly, always wear your safety belt and designate a sober driver if you plan to drink."

The 2008 Thanksgiving holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, through midnight on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008.
