Contact:  Mallory Curtis, Public Affairs Section, (517) 336-6154
Agency: State Police

F/Lt. John Card is the recipient of the MSP Distinguished Service Award for his efforts with Special Olympics. EAST LANSING.  Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Colonel Peter C. Munoz is pleased to announce that First Lieutenant John Card is the recipient of the MSP Distinguished Service Award for his efforts with Special Olympics.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented to MSP members who demonstrate extraordinary diligence and perseverance, and perform activities beyond what are normally expected.

Card has been a member of the MSP Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Central Route Team for 14 years, serving as its team captain since 2001.  Each year, the volunteer, six-person team completes a 750-mile, non-stop relay from Copper Harbor to Metro Detroit.  This race is part of a larger series of relay-runs that contribute to the world-wide initiative to raise funds and awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics.

Due to his dedication, Card was selected to represent the State of Michigan at the Special Olympics World Games in Japan in 2005.  While there, he had the honor of participating in the International Law Enforcement Torch Run.  Today, Card serves on the Law Enforcement Torch Run Executive Committee and holds the position of Co-Director for the State of Michigan.

Card joined the department in 1988, graduating as a member of the 103rd Trooper Recruit School.  He has served at the Grand Haven Post and the Criminal Investigation Division, and is currently the commander of the Bay City Post.  Card is a graduate of the 210th Session of the FBI National Academy.

During his career, Card has received two Professional Excellence Awards, which are presented to MSP members for outstanding service.
