Contact:  Josephine Klotz, Training Academy, (517) 322-6319
Agency: State Police

LANSINGThis week, 53 Michigan high school students are experiencing the training needed to become Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers during the 34th annual Michigan District of Kiwanis Student Trooper Program.  The program began on June 21 at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing and will conclude with a graduation ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 26.

Between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the students are learning about traffic and criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms and marksmanship fundamentals, first-aid, water safety, narcotics, search and seizure, patrol tactics, crash investigations, law enforcement career opportunities, forensic science, conservation law, underwater recovery, and leadership.

"We try to give these students a glimpse of what it takes to become a Michigan State Police trooper," said First Lieutenant Michael Krumm of the MSP Training Academy.  "The focus on law enforcement fundamentals and the structured aspect of the program help promote the importance of education and build teamwork."

The school is designed for highly motivated young men and women who are seriously interested in a career in law enforcement.  Each student is sponsored by one of the Michigan District of Kiwanis Clubs located throughout the state.  The school is hosted by the MSP with assistance from deputies and officers from other Michigan police agencies.
