LANSING. The Michigan State Police (MSP) confirmed today that preliminary reports indicate three people lost their lives in three separate traffic crashes during the 2009 Lifesaver Weekend. In comparison, four people died in traffic crashes during the 2008 Lifesaver Weekend.
"These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported as of noon today," stated Capt. Robert R. Powers, Jr., commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division. "This reduction in fatalities reflects the coordinated effort between law enforcement and the motoring public, and we hope this positive trend continues through the holiday season."
Of the three victims, two were known to have been restrained by safety belts, and alcohol was not known to be a factor in any of the crashes.
Lifesaver Weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, through midnight on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009.
