The Investigative Services Bureau is comprised of all the divisions that provide investigative services for the department. The Investigative Services Bureau consists of the Field Detective Division, two Criminal Investigation Divisions, and the Forensic Science Division.
Field Detective Division
The Field Detective Division is composed of detectives assigned to posts who provide primary and support investigative services.
The Criminal Intelligence Unit is also within this division. The mission of this unit is to collect, analyze and disseminate criminal intelligence to identify crime trends, which will assist with the strategic and tactical deployment of public safety assets. The coordination of the Forensic Artist Program is also a responsibility of the Intelligence Unit
Forensic Science Division
The Forensic Science Division is comprised of seven laboratories and ten additional locations which provide polygraph testing services. State-of-the-art forensic laboratory services, including crime scene and 'post-blast' investigations, drug analysis, document examination, polygraph testing, latent print examination, latent print examination, AFIS, DNA analysis, toxicology analysis, blood/alcohol analysis, firearms and toolmark examination, arson evidence analysis, and serology and trace evidence analysis are provided to division clientele.
Criminal Investigation Division
The Criminal Investigation Division provides investigative services for local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in 73 Michigan counties. The division consists of many distinctive teams and units. The division currently administers 15 multijurisdictional teams. Responsibilities of the division range from investigation in specialized areas such as white collar crimes, computer crimes, tax fraud, money laundering, and auto theft investigations to fugitive apprehension and narcotics sales, use, diversion, and trafficking. One highly specialized unit, the Technical Services Unit, is responsible for a variety of electronic equipment. Electronic surveillance greatly enhances the capabilities of investigators to gather evidence in complex investigations.
The Fire Investigation Unit provides fire/arson investigation services and fire investigation training to local police. Field Operations is broken into three regions with regional offices in Northville, Saginaw, and Gaylord. Investigators are spread throughout the state at 18 locations; Northville, Jackson, Richmond, Saginaw, Caro, Flint, Mt. Pleasant, West Branch, Gaylord, Cadillac, Negaunee, Iron Mountain, Petoskey, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Niles, Paw Paw, and White Cloud.
Southeastern Criminal Investigation Division
The primary purpose of SECID is to assist, coordinate and cooperate with all local, state and federal agencies within our area of responsibility, including our Canadian counterparts, to reach their ultimate goal – the arrest of criminals. SECID efforts are directed toward the sophisticated criminals in the areas of computer/high-tech crimes, organized crime, narcotics, gambling, auto theft, white collar crime, money laundering, tobacco tax fraud, etc.
SECID’s area of responsibility encompasses the counties of Monroe, Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, Jackson, Lenawee, and Hillsdale.
