The Intelligence Section (IS) consists of the Intelligence and Violent Crime Units.

The Intelligence Unit (IU) is the clearinghouse for statewide intelligence and provides Weekly Intelligence Briefings (WIB) with law enforcement related information to over 600 agencies statewide. They also disseminate Special Intelligence Briefings (SIB) on information that needs to get to the field in a timely manner. IU serves as a resource to law enforcement agencies in the state for analytical information, investigative assistance, and complex case charting. Members of the unit have geographical responsibilities of criminal investigative assistance in addition to threat area specializations such as domestic terrorism, criminal outlaw motorcycle gangs, and criminal street gangs.

The main responsibility of the Violent Crime Unit (VCU) is their participation in the crime scene behavioral analysis team. This team analyzes the primary data found at the scene of a violent crime and attempts to reconstruct the behavioral events leading up to the crime. These crimes include homicides, sex crimes, threatening behavior, and questionable deaths.

The Violent Crime Unit (VCU) maintains the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP). The ViCAP mission is to facilitate cooperation, communication, and coordination between law enforcement agencies and provide support in their efforts to investigate, identify, track, apprehend, and prosecute violent serial offenders. The VCU is also responsible for the Sex Motivated Crime (SMC) file and the Long Term Storage (LTS) property room. The forensic artist program is administered through the VCU.
