LANSING. Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter C. Munoz is pleased to announce that MC Ofcr. Michael Morey of the Lansing Post is the recipient of the 2009 Motor Carrier Officer of the Year Award.
The Motor Carrier Officer of the Year award, sponsored by the Michigan Trucking Association since 1985, recognizes the MSP motor carrier officer who symbolizes outstanding professional ethics, dedication to duty and concern for giving back to their community. Morey received the award today at a special ceremony in Lansing.
"Officer Morey was chosen for this honor because of his professionalism and motivation both on-duty and in his community," said Munoz. "His work ethic and dedication to service set a high standard of excellence for all to follow."
Always eager to learn and apply new skills, Morey responds to challenges with enthusiasm, often surpassing enforcement goals. Co-workers credit Morey for not being intimidated by unusual situations such as language barriers and drug trafficking.
Morey has earned a reputation for being professional and fair, and for taking the time to educate commercial vehicle operators during every contact. Due to his vast knowledge and expertise, he is often sought out by other agencies to assist with commercial motor vehicle crashes and traffic stops.
A devote family man, Morey is active at his children's schools, serving as a basketball and softball coach. He also participates in the Reading is Fundamental program and volunteers to record high school football games for broadcast on local television.
Morey and his wife, Trisha, and their two daughters, Ashlee and Brittnee, helped build a house with Habitat for Humanity in Wacosta, Mich. last summer. Brittnee is in sixth grade at Dwight Rich Middle School and Ashlee will graduate with honors from Sexton High School in June.
Morey joined the department in 2001, and graduated as a member of the 13th Motor Carrier Recruit School. Prior to his assignment at the Lansing Post, Morey served at the Jackson Post.
