LANSING. At a special ceremony today in Lansing, Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter C. Munoz presented Det. Tpr. Adam Ladd of the Detroit Post with the MSP Bravery Award. He is credited with risking his life to protect fellow officers.
In October 2007, Ladd was part of a multijurisdictional team conducting a drug deal using an undercover federal agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). When the agent entered the target residence, he was immediately attacked by three suspects.
As the ATF agent fought for his life, Ladd and the rest of the team rushed to help. Knowing the agent was in mortal danger, and since the front door was locked, Ladd broke the glass in the front window and pointed his rifle into the room.
Startled by Ladd's sudden arrival, the suspects fled to the back of the house and exited the rear through a window. Seconds later, Ladd heard gunfire coming from the side of the house. He turned in time to see one of the suspects raise a handgun in the direction of another officer. Ladd discharged his weapon, fatally wounding the suspect and preventing him from firing at the officer.
Upon reviewing this incident, the MSP Board of Awards determined Ladd's heroic actions were instrumental in saving the lives of two officers.
Ladd enlisted with the department in 2000, graduating as a member of the 119th Trooper Recruit School. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and graduate of Mott Community College. Prior to his assignment at the Detroit Post, he served at the Bad Axe Post. He is currently on temporary assignment with the Criminal Investigation Division, Violent Crimes Investigative Section, with the ATF. Ladd currently lives in the Brighton area with his wife, Alison.
