LANSING. At a special ceremony today in Lansing, Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter C. Munoz presented Tpr. Richard Jones of the Bridgeport Post with the MSP Lifesaving Award.
On Sept. 26, 2009, Jones and Tpr. George Bingham (Ret.) responded to assist the Saginaw Police Department at a shooting scene. Upon arrival, the troopers noticed a 6-month-old baby in a car seat with a gunshot wound. Because the heavy traffic in the area would have slowed the response of an ambulance, the troopers transported the baby to the hospital in their patrol car. Emergency room doctors indicated that without the quick actions of Bingham and Jones, the child would not have survived.
Jones enlisted with the department in 2004, graduating as a member of the 120th Trooper Recruit School. After graduation he was assigned to the Bridgeport Post.
