LANSING. Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter C. Munoz is pleased to announce that Tpr. Brian McComb of the Bad Axe Post is the recipient of the MSP Lifesaving Award.
On Aug. 27, 2009, McComb responded to a traffic crash on M-53 near Barrie Road that left the driver without a pulse and not breathing. Upon arrival, McComb found a pick-up truck had left the roadway and struck several parked vehicles belonging to a local business.
The pick-up truck involved in the accident was extensively damaged and McComb had to pry the door open to free the driver from the vehicle. On scene, Conservation Officers Bob Hobkirk and Scott Brown along with Dr. Chris Gong worked with McComb providing first aid. The driver was removed from the vehicle and CPR was started by Dr. Gong and Officer Brown. McComb attached an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the man and administered several shocks, which caused his heart to start beating again. The man was then transported to the hospital by Central Huron Ambulance. Bad Axe Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
Upon reviewing the circumstances of this incident, the MSP Board of Awards concluded McComb's quick actions and knowledge of first aid techniques helped save the man's life.
McComb enlisted with the department in 2000, graduating as a member of the 119th Trooper Recruit School. After graduation he was assigned to the Bad Axe Post. Prior to his career with the MSP, he served as a member of the Tuscola County Sheriff's Department. McComb currently resides in Caro with his wife Julie.
