January 26, 2010 - First Two "Most Wanted" Sex Offenders of 2010 Arrested

Contact:  Sgt. Kevin Mark, MSP Sex Offender Registry and Enforcement Unit, (517) 322-4939
Agency: State Police

LansingThe Michigan State Police (MSP) is announcing that Steven Michael Kudrak, 40, and Laura Sue Morton, 39, have been arrested on outstanding warrants for failing to comply with the Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act.  Both individuals were featured as absconders on the state's Most Wanted Sex Offenders Web site at www.michigan.gov/absconders

Officers from the MSP Sixth District Fugitive Team and the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) obtained information that Kudrak was living at a residence in Muskegon Heights.  He was arrested at the residence on Jan. 5, 2010.  Kudrak was convicted of First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct (Multiple Variables) in 1991, and also has convictions in 2007 and 2008, for failure to comply with registry requirements.  He is currently in the Muskegon County Jail.

Morton surrendered herself to law enforcement in Jackson County on Jan. 15, 2010.  Morton was convicted of Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree (Person Under 13) in 1992, and also has a previous conviction for failure to comply with registry requirements.  She has been arraigned and released on bond.

Michigan's Sex Offenders Registration Act requires offenders convicted of felony-listed offenses to verify their address at a local law enforcement agency quarterly during the first 15 days of January, April, July and October.  Offenders are also required to report a change of address when they move or vacate a residence.  Failure to do so can result in a felony conviction with a punishment ranging from four to 10 years in prison.

The MSP Web site began featuring the names and photographs of 10 of the state's most wanted sex offenders in August 2006.  As wanted individuals are located, new offenders are featured.  Fifteen featured absconders were arrested in 2009; the most in any year since the list began.  The public can provide information about any offender by contacting the MSP toll free at 1-866-761-7678, or by contacting the nearest law enforcement agency.
