East Lansing: The Michigan State Police is pleased to announce that Trooper Shun N. Green of the Ypsilanti Post received the Award for Valor from The Hundred Club of Detroit for his heroic actions earlier this year. The award was presented to Green at the Hundred Club of Detroit awards program on Oct. 13.
On Jan. 24, a car hit the eastbound I-94 median due to inclement weather. A male subject stopped to assist the driver, resulting in two vehicles stopped on the left shoulder. While policing a separate accident, Green witnessed a tractor-trailer sliding on the icy roads into the stopped vehicles. The male subject was outside of his vehicle and was struck by the tractor-trailer. The force of the impact threw the male subject over the median wall and into oncoming westbound traffic.
Without hesitation Green radioed for assistance and positioned his patrol vehicle to divert eastbound traffic around the accident. Green jumped over the median wall onto westbound I-94 and pulled the male subject out of oncoming traffic. After tending to his injuries, Green noticed the tractor-trailer’s rear tires were on top of one of the stopped vehicles, trapping a female subject inside. Green jumped back over the median wall and crawled under the tractor-trailer to remove the female subject from her car. Green’s quick and heroic actions are credited with helping save both subjects.
Green joined the department in 1987, and was a graduate of the 101st Recruit School. After graduation he was assigned to the Ypsilanti Post and has worked there for 17 years. Prior to joining the department, Green served in the United States Marine Corps. from 1981 to 1987. In April 2004, Green received the Michigan State Police Lifesaving Award for his heroic actions in this incident.
