Field Operations Division Receives New Commander

January 5, 2004

EAST LANSING. Michigan State Police Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant has announced the assignment of Captain Daniel B. Atkinson as commander of the Field Operations Division (formerly Special Operations Division) in East Lansing. Prior to his transfer, Atkinson served as Fifth District commander.

As commander of the Field Operations Division, Atkinson is responsible for the activities of the Traffic Services, Field Support, Aviation and Operations sections. This division is responsible for providing a wide range of support services to police agencies throughout the state.

Atkinson joined the department in 1985, and was a graduate of the 99th Recruit School. Since graduation he has served at the Northville, Bridgeport and Flint posts, as well as the Executive and Criminal Investigation divisions. During his career, Atkinson has held the ranks of trooper, sergeant, lieutenant, detective first lieutenant, inspector and captain.

He currently resides in Durand with his wife and three children.
