Anonymous Tip Leads to Fugitive Arrest

March 25, 2005

Lansing: An anonymous tip received by the Michigan State Police (MSP) led to the arrest of one of Michigan’s Most Wanted fugitives. Gary Gene Garlinghouse, 57, was arrested by the United States Marshals Service (USMS) in Austin, Texas on March 23, 2005.

Using information received from an MSP anonymous tip line and working with the USMS in Grand Rapids, the MSP First District Fugitive Team determined Garlinghouse was living in Texas. Detectives then contacted the USMS in Texas who located and arrested Garlinghouse without incident at his residence in Travis County.

"This arrest was a direct result of the information we received from the public and is an excellent example of law enforcement working with the public to bring fugitives to justice," said Detective Sergeant Frank Williams, MSP First District Fugitive Team. "You never know what information could be the turning point in an investigation."

Garlinghouse was wanted on a 28-count felony warrant originating from a 1979 investigation by the Royal Oak Police Department. The warrant included charges of criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, attempted murder and flight to avoid prosecution.

Garlinghouse is currently lodged in Austin, Texas and is awaiting extradition to Michigan, where his case will be handled by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
