Prison Escapee In Police Custody

Contact:  Lt. Harold Love, MSP Groveland Team, (248) 634-4584

July 21, 2005

Southfield - Three days after he walked away from a work detail at the Mound Correctional Facility in Detroit, convicted felon Lawrence Kevin Jones is back in police custody at the Michigan State Police (MSP) Detroit Post.  Federal, state and local law enforcement officers worked around the clock following up on tips and other investigative leads to locate Jones.

The investigation led MSP troopers and detectives, members of the MSP 2nd District Fugitive Team and the Violent Crimes Investigative Section, as well as special agents from the FBI Detroit Office to the Franklin River Apartments in Southfield.  There, officers set up surveillance, arresting Jones at approximately 1 p.m. when he and two other males exited an apartment and got into a vehicle.

As they attempted to drive out of the parking lot, all three subjects were taken into custody without incident.  One half-pound of marijuana and a pellet gun were found inside the vehicle.  Officers then searched the apartment the men were leaving and located an additional half-pound of marijuana and arrested a female subject.  Jones and the three subjects were transported to the MSP Detroit Post for processing and further questioning.

Cooperative efforts from the Detroit Police Department F.A.S.T. Team; the FBI; MSP Detroit, Richmond, Metro North and Battle Creek posts; and teams from the MSP Region II Special Investigation Division contributed to the successful capture of Jones and his accomplices.
