State Officials In Contact With Department Of Homeland Security; No Specific Threats To Michigan

Contact:  F/Lt. Charles Loader (517) 336-6435

July 21, 2005

Lansing -  First responders and emergency management officials in Michigan are monitoring the events that occurred in London today even though there are no specific threats to Michigan.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) was in contact with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) this morning and learned there is still no intelligence information that would indicate any specific threats to Michigan or any other state.  However, precautions are being taken to ensure a quick and effective response to any threat that might arise.  The MSP, at the direction of Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, stands ready to coordinate state response actions in the event of an emergency in accordance with previously established emergency plans.

The threat level for mass transit, which was raised on July 7, remains at ORANGE (High), including the City of Detroit’s People Mover, passenger rail and maritime transportation (ferry) of more than 150 passengers (MARSEC Level II).  The overall threat level for the United States mainland, excluding mass transit systems, remains at YELLOW (Elevated).

The MSP Emergency Management Division, the agency responsible for Michigan’s homeland security, is in regular contact with DHS and other federal, state, local and transportation officials in an effort to ensure public safety.

“Along with our federal, county and local law enforcement partners, the Michigan State Police is closely monitoring the events in London,” said Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant, director of the MSP and Michigan’s Homeland Security Director.   “While there are still no specific threats to Michigan, we will not let our guard down and we hope the public does the same.”

Again, the MSP is asking the public to increase awareness of their surroundings, particularly on or around transportation systems.  Citizens are reminded to contact their local police department if they notice any suspicious activity including unknown packages, devices, unattended briefcases and\or persons who appear out-of-place.  Remember, if you see something – say something!

Additionally, businesses and governmental agencies are reminded to review previous security measures and be familiar with emergency plans.

More information regarding Michigan’s homeland security efforts can be found on the Emergency Management Division’s Web site, located at www.michigan.gov/emd.
