Miller,-John-A.,-MCO

LANSING. Michigan State Police Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant is pleased to announce that Motor Carrier Officer John A. Miller of the South Haven Post is the recipient of the 2005 Motor Carrier Officer of the Year Award.  Miller was chosen for the award due to his high level of enthusiasm and motivation both on the job and in his community.

The Motor Carrier Officer of the Year award, which has been sponsored by the Michigan Trucking Association since 1985, recognizes the motor carrier officer who symbolizes outstanding professional ethics, dedication to duty and concern for giving back to their community.   Miller received the award today at a special ceremony in Lansing.

A motor carrier officer for the past seven years, Miller has represented the department’s Motor Carrier Division in a variety of public forums by serving as a recruiter for the division.  He has also been assigned to operations impacting homeland security along the International Border.  In his daily job, Miller enforces a wide range of Commercial Motor Vehicle laws and is extremely knowledgeable in Commercial Motor Vehicle regulations.

Miller was called to active duty twice in the last four years as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.  He first served in Operation Noble Eagle from October 2001 to September 2002, and again for Operation Iraqi Freedom for all of calendar year 2004.  Miller, a 19-year veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, was assigned to the Abu Graib Prison in Baghdad, Iraq.

In his community, Miller is a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph.  He is an active participant in several fundraisers with his son, Cody, who will be a Student Ambassador to Australia in 2006 with People to People.

Miller joined the department in 1998, and graduated as a member of the 11th Motor Carrier Recruit School.  Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Bridgman Post.  In 2003, he transferred to his current assignment at the South Haven Post.

Miller is a native of Benton Harbor.  He currently resides in St. Joseph with his wife, Sheila, and two sons, Cody and Conner.
