Email Notification Option Now Part Of Public Sex Offender Registry

Contact:  Shanon Akans, MSP Public Affairs, (517) 336-6364

January 3, 2007

LANSING-Michigan residents can now receive notification via email when a registered sex offender moves into their neighborhood, as stipulated in Public Act 46 of 2006.

Interested individuals may sign up for the free service at http://www.mipsor.state.mi.us.  Following registration, an automated email will be generated and sent when an offender moves into a specified zip code.  Users can enter up to six zip codes, and may modify their zip code list at any time.

The web site for the Public Sex Offender Registry (PSOR) was recently upgraded to provide users with easier search capabilities and more detailed information about offenders.  Over the next year, additional features and information will be added to the site in an ongoing effort to make the PSOR a helpful tool for the public.

The PSOR has been online at http://www.mipsor.state.mi.us since 1999.  As of November 3, 2006 , there were 19,489 offenders in the PSOR .
