Supplemental Assistance to City of Fenton is Not Warranted at This Time

Contact:  First Lieutenant Harold Love, MSP EMHSD, (517) 333-5038

The Michigan State Police (MSP) Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD) has determined supplemental funding is not warranted at this time in response to Genesee County's request for state financial assistance for the City of Fenton.

On August 25, Governor Granholm declared a local State of Emergency in response to the August 24 wind storms and EF-3 tornado.  Nearly $100,000 in direct assistance by the Department of State Police and the Department of Transportation was sent to aid local officials with debris clearance, traffic control and security functions.  Under the Michigan Emergency Management Act, Section 30.419, officials may request and the Governor may provide one-time funding of up to $30,000 from the state's Disaster Contingency Fund to a county or municipality, when federal assistance is not available.  Direct assistance already provided by the state must also be factored into consideration of the request.

Based on damage assessment information received, EMHSD concluded the City of Fenton incurred considerable unexpected expenses during response and recovery efforts.  However, the amount of direct assistance already provided exceeds the $30,000 amount.
