EAST LANSING. The Michigan State Police (MSP) will dedicate patrols to traffic safety this weekend as part of the Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) Lifesaver Weekend, which aims to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities during the heavily traveled holiday season.
During Lifesaver Weekend, MSP troopers will join other state police and highway patrol agencies from across the United States and Canada in an effort to improve traffic safety.
"This weekend is historically a busy travel period due to holiday parties, Christmas shopping and other functions," stated Col. Peter C. Munoz, director of the MSP. "To ensure everyone makes it to their destination safely, troopers will be on patrol throughout the weekend taking a zero-tolerance approach to intoxicated drivers and motorists who are driving in an unsafe manner."
Operation C.A.R.E. Lifesaver weekend begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, and runs through midnight, on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007. Last year, there were five fatal traffic crashes that resulted in five deaths over the Operation C.A.R.E. Lifesaver weekend.
"The Michigan State Police want you to have an enjoyable holiday season, but remind you to do so in a safe and responsible manner," Munoz added.
Note: During the Operation C.A.R.E. Lifesaver holiday weekend, the media is encouraged to contact their local MSP post for the latest in holiday traffic information.
