January 24, 2008 - Carney Resident Named 2007 Civilian Of The Year

Contact:  F/Lt. Karen McCormack, MSP Stephenson Post, (906) 753-2276

Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Colonel Peter C. Munoz is pleased to announce that Mary Erickson of the Stephenson Post is the 2007 recipient of the Floyd R. Bell Jr. Civilian of the Year Award.  She was presented the award at a special ceremony today in Lansing.

"Ms. Erickson was chosen as Civilian of the Year for her accomplishments both on and off the job," said Munoz.  "She exemplifies the department's proud tradition of service through excellence, integrity and courtesy."

As secretary of the Stephenson Post, Erickson's work ethic and leadership create a positive work environment.  She is known for her organization and office skills which include assisting in managing the post's budget.  This past year, her attention to detail and extra effort helped the Stephenson Post navigate a tight financial situation while still producing a cost savings.

Erickson is always willing to take-on added responsibility at the post.  One such example is a method she developed for the easy storage and retrieval of digital images required for court proceedings.

Away from work, Erickson is very active in her school system.  She is the current Carney-Nadeau School Board Treasurer, volunteers at the science fair, and regularly raises funds to support extracurricular activities.

As a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Erickson awards academic assistance scholarships to high school seniors.  She also teaches children how to properly care for animals as part of the Michigan State University Extension 4-H Club.

Erickson has been the secretary of the Stephenson Post for 12 years.  She currently resides in Carney with her husband, Wayne, and her two children Issac and Kaisa.  The family operates a small hobby farm tending to livestock, poultry and pets.

The Civilian of the Year Award is named in honor of the late Floyd R. Bell Jr., a 42-year MSP member who continuously demonstrated commitment and dedication to the department and his community.
