February 28, 2008 - Special Training Addresses Mortgage Fraud Investigations

Contact:  D/F/Lt Marty Bugbee, MSP Criminal Investigation Section, (734) 466-8601

Michigan State Police (MSP) investigators are now better prepared to handle cases of mortgage fraud following a two-day mortgage fraud investigation and prosecution training held earlier this week in Livonia.

Developed specifically to address mortgage fraud in Michigan, the training consisted of classroom instruction and scenario-based workshops.  Officers learned how to identify fraudulent activity, as well as advanced investigative techniques that will lead to a higher likelihood of prosecution.

"With mortgage fraud becoming more prevalent, it is important that investigators have the tools needed to both identify it and build a case against an offender," stated Detective First Lieutenant Marty Bugbee, commander of the MSP Criminal Investigation Section.

This training seminar was a cooperative effort between the MSP, Michigan Attorney General's Office and the mortgage industry.  Over 40 law enforcement officers and mortgage industry personnel participated.

The MSP is in the process of planning future training sessions for additional law enforcement personnel.
