June 11, 2008 - City of Lansing Request for State Assistance Under Review

The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is actively reviewing a request from the City of Lansing for a Governor's Declaration and for resources to assist with debris clearance and damage assessment, following a request received at 4 p.m. yesterday.

MSP/EMHSD personnel are in the field today assessing the most severely impacted areas.  As part of that review, MSP/EMHSD personnel will conduct a damage assessment flight over Delta Township and the City of Lansing to obtain aerial photos and video footage to assist with the assessment process.  State damage assessment teams will also perform ground surveys in Lansing to determine if there are any potential threats to public health and safety, such as limited access for emergency vehicles; roads and sidewalks obstructed by debris; or trees leaning on utility equipment.

The MSP/EMHSD is also contacting officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Small Business Administration (SBA) to determine whether federal assessment resources are available.

A decision regarding this request will not be made until the damage assessment is complete.
