October 21, 2008 - Take the "Big Rig Challenge"

Contact:  Alyson Kechkaylo, OHSP, (517) 333-5304

Motorists pass hundreds of trucks on the road every year, and most have little idea of the special skills it takes to drive an 18-wheeler. To celebrate Michigan Truck Safety Week, Oct. 18-25, the public is invited to take the "Big Rig Challenge" with the Truck Training Simulator at three events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Michigan Truck Safety Commission (MTSC).

Climbing into the simulator takes drivers into the cab of a truck where they are exposed to hazardous conditions, distractions, environment changes and real-time feedback to make the experience as lifelike as possible.

"The simulator is an excellent training tool for commercial motor vehicle drivers. Thousands of drivers have benefited from the training the Simulator offers since it was made available in 2007, but we also know it is a fun and unique experience for everyday citizens to feel what it's like to get behind the wheel of a big truck," Jacqueline El-Sayed, MTSC chair said.

The simulator will be traveling to Lansing, Saginaw and Grand Rapids. Anyone can take the "Big Rig Challenge" from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the following locations:

  • Michigan Capitol Building, 111 S Capitol Ave., Lansing on Tuesday, Oct. 21
  • Flying J Truck Center, Saginaw (1-75 and M-81) on Wednesday, Oct. 22
  • Exit 76 Auto Truck Plaza, Grand Rapids (off 131)  on Thursday, Oct. 23

The Lansing event will also serve as the kick off for Operation Safe Driver, a national enforcement program sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CMVA).

The simulator is used by the Michigan Center for Truck Safety as a training tool for commercial motor vehicle drivers. The Center receives grant money from the MTSC to provide continuing education and training programs.

Through the work of the Commission and its many partners, the number of commercial vehicle-involved crashes has decreased by 31 percent since 2000.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the MTSC and two decades of working through enforcement and education to improve truck travel on highways throughout the state. Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has declared this week Truck Safety Week in Michigan.
