LANSING. At a special ceremony today in Lansing, Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Colonel Peter C. Munoz presented Trooper Charlene Green of the Metro South Post with the MSP Lifesaving Award. She is credited with performing significant actions resulting in the saving of a life.
On Aug. 31, 2008, Green was assisting with a traffic stop when another vehicle stopped abruptly and the driver began yelling that her child was dying. As Green approached the vehicle, she observed an 11-year-old girl with a deep, six-inch long laceration along her inner arm.
Green immediately applied pressure to the exposed artery, while the girl drifted in and out of consciousness. When emergency medical personnel arrived, they advised Green to continue the pressure on the artery, as it was keeping the girl alive.
Upon reviewing the circumstances of this incident, the MSP Board of Awards concluded Green's quick actions and knowledge of first aid techniques saved the girl's life.
Green enlisted with the department in 1989, graduating as a member of the 106th Trooper Recruit School. Prior to her assignment at the Metro South Post, she served at the Caro and Flat Rock posts.
