The Search for Scott A. Woodring; Over 130 Tips Received So Far

July 10, 2003

Grand Rapids - The Michigan State Police announced in a 6 p.m. press conference that the search for Scott A. Woodring continues. At this time, the incident has shifted from a barricaded gunman situation to an investigation.

More than 130 tips have been received. Tips place Woodring in many areas of the state. Approximately five or six tips are classified as high priority and are being intensively investigated.

The focus of the investigation at this time centers on a tip that places Woodring on foot in the south, central part of Lincoln Township in Newaygo County near the White River. Detectives and Emergency Support Team members, assisted by Canine Units, are canvassing that area at this time.

The subject who we believe might be Woodring was described as wearing blue jeans, a gray T-shirt and carrying a black camouflage backpack. We consider Woodring to be armed and extremely dangerous; he should not be approached. Anyone who believes they have seen Woodring should call 911 or the tip center at 1-800-991-TIPS (8477).

Michigan State Police detectives, who are currently processing Woodring’s residence in Fremont report that the following items have been found at the residence:

  • Canned and tinned foodstuffs and liquids (quantity estimated to last several months)
  • 200 + pounds of silver coin
  • Undetermined, but significant amount of gold coins
  • 2 lever action rifles
  • 3 semi-automatic .22 rifles with banana clips (loaded)
  • One 12-gauge shotgun (loaded)
  • One undetermined firearm (damaged in the fire)
  • Thousands of rounds of .223 ammunition
  • Thousands of rounds of .22 ammunition
  • A large amount of 12-gauge ammunition (slugs and buckshot)
  • An amount of .45 caliber ammunition
  • Expended 7.62x39 ammunition (type of rounds used in SKS and AK-47 assault rifles)

The complete and final list of items recovered in the residence will be documented on the tabulation and return of the search warrant.

Detectives also report that at this time, the following items have not been found in the residence:

  • Several handguns registered to Woodring
  • A .45 caliber weapon
  • The weapon carried by Trooper Kevin Marshall

To clarify questions that have arisen at previous press conferences, Inspector Barry Getzen of the Michigan State Police offered the following statements:

  1. There were no tunnels found at the residence.
  2. The backpack that has been identified as Woodring’s which was found in the woods near his residence contained .223 ammunition and small foodstuffs such as raisins and other high-energy trail-type foods. It also included some light camping/survival gear and clothing.
  3. Similar backpacks have been found at the residence. At least one of these backpacks contained a gas mask and survival equipment such as foil blankets and military Meals Ready to Eat (MREs).

In response to questions about the actions taken at the residence on Tuesday, State Police officials’ report that a process called "force continuum" was used. Law enforcement officers often use this tactic, which calls for continued incremental increases in the force of actions over a period of time, until the suspect’s compliance with commands is achieved.
