Woodring Investigation Continues

July 14, 2003

East Lansing - The Michigan State Police is continuing their investigation into the escape and shooting of Scott A. Woodring. Woodring was shot and killed on Sunday, July 13, 2003, after an armed confrontation with State Police in Newaygo County.

The Michigan State Police offer their condolences to the family of Scott Woodring. It was the hope of the State Police that Woodring would surrender peacefully.

MSP officials report that Dr. Stephen Cohle is currently performing an autopsy at the Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids. The preliminary results may be released this week.

As of Friday, the reward for information leading to the capture of Woodring doubled. The Michigan State Police Troopers Association (MSPTA) made the initial contribution of $10,000, which was matched by a contribution from the Michigan State Police Hardship Fund, bringing the total reward to $20,000.

Investigation is continuing at this time to determine if anyone aided Woodring in either escaping from his residence or while he was a fugitive felon. The Newaygo County Prosecutor’s Office will charge anyone identified as aiding Woodring or materially assisting him with Accessory After the Fact, which is a five-year felony.
