East Lansing - With the last holiday of the summer nearing, the Michigan State Police will be out in full force to keep Labor Day travelers safe on Michigan’s roads.
During the Labor Day holiday weekend, troopers will again participate in the nationwide Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) safety initiative. Additionally, troopers will also join other law enforcement agencies in Michigan in the "Click It or Ticket/Buckle Up or Pay Up," safety belt enforcement campaign.
"It only takes a second to fasten your safety belt and that second may save your life," stated Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant, director of the Michigan State Police. "Please drive responsibly by not getting behind the wheel after drinking. Together we can all have a safe and fun holiday weekend."
The official Labor Day holiday weekend begins at 6 p.m., Friday, September 3, and runs through midnight, Monday, September 6, 2004. During the same period last year, there were 11 fatal traffic crashes resulting in 12 deaths. Alcohol was a factor in four of the traffic crashes, and four of those who died were not wearing their safety belts.
Note: During the Labor Day holiday weekend, the media is encouraged to contact their local Michigan State Police post for the latest in holiday traffic information.
