Homeland Security Joint Aviation Operation

The Aviation Unit has Entered into a cooperative agreement with the City of Detroit Policement to establish a joint aviation operation. The first helicopter patrols began on January 6, 2009.

The Homeland Security Joint Aviation Operation (HSJAO) is based at the Detroit Police Aviation Hanger at the Coleman A. Young International Airport at 11499 Conner, Detroit, Detroit, Michigan 48213. Air operations will normally be conducted during the afternoon shifts, Tuesday through Saturday, to maximize response to criminal activity.

The goal of the HSJAO is to enhance service, response time, in conjunction with responding ground units. In addition to the helicopter crew's observation capability, the advanced onboard technology equipment will assist in responding to "in progress" calls such as violent crimes, pursuits, missing children, and specialized team operations.
