Overview: 2011 Great Lakes Homeland Security Training Conference & Expo

Celebrating its 12th year, the 2011 Great Lakes Homeland Security Training Conference & Expo was held from May 3-5 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Focusing on "Never Forget," this year's conference paid tribute to the upcoming 10-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The conference was hosted by the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division in partnership with the Michigan Department of Community Health- Office of Public Health Preparedness and the FBI- Detroit Office.

This year's conference brought together more than 1,400 attendees from the public and private sectors, all levels of government, emergency management, law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, public health and healthcare, security officers, and school administrators. Attendees had an opportunity to attend a wide-array of workshops, network with fellow partners, and visit with more than 50 exhibitors.

The three-day conference hosted a dynamic line-up of speakers, including keynote speakers Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York city, and Lt. General Russel Honoré, (Ret.), U.S. Army, who served as commander of the Joint Task Force for Hurricane Katrina. In addition, workshop topics included active shooters, hospital security, Haiti earthquake lessons learned, recognizing bomb threats, broadband for public safety, and crisis management.

The conference provided training to all disciplines of homeland security and emergency management to continue strengthening Michigan's capabilities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from potential threats.

The 2012 Great Lakes Homeland Security Training Conference & Expo is scheduled for May 1-3, 2012, and will be held at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
