LANSING. The State of Michigan will receive $36.1 million in U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) preparedness grants during Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 to bolster the state's protection, prevention, response and recovery capabilities for potential man-made and natural emergencies. 

As part of the preparedness grants, Michigan will receive nearly $1.4 million under Operation Stonegarden (OPSG) dedicated to supporting law enforcement personnel in securing our shared land borders and waterways with Canada.  Michigan received the third highest award among northern border states.

"These grants will further enable Michigan's emergency responders to protect citizens against threats to our homeland by enhancing security of our borders, critical infrastructures and nonprofit organizations," said Col. Eddie L. Washington, Jr., director of the Michigan State Police and State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

The DHS will provide more than $1.8 billion nationwide in preparedness grants for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010.  Michigan will receive the eleventh highest award among all eligible states and territories.

More than 80 percent of Michigan's total award will be allocated to local and tribal governments after the DHS sends the official grant award notification.  The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is the designated state administrative agency for federal homeland security grants.
