LANSING. Today, state resources from several departments are actively working in the city of Battle Creek and Calhoun County to clear debris from any blocked roadways causing safety hazards following the storms on May 29.
The Michigan Departments of State Police (MSP), Transportation (MDOT), Natural Resources (DNR) and Corrections (DOC) deployed resources to the affected areas to assist local response efforts in ensuring roadways are accessible for emergency personnel.
A variety of state personnel and equipment are being utilized in the ongoing response efforts, including work crews, chainsaws, dump trucks and front-end loaders. In addition, personnel with the MSP Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) continue to work side-by-side with local officials in their Incident Command Post to assist with coordinating response efforts.
Since Gov. Rick Snyder declared a state of emergency on May 31, the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) remains activated to coordinate the state's response efforts and to work in collaboration with local, state, federal and private partners.
To prevent any potential safety hazards, residents are reminded to avoid placing any debris in roadways and on sidewalks. Citizens needing assistance with removing debris from private property can call 2-1-1 or visit www.uwmich.org/2-1-1/2-1-1-call-centers, which is a free referral service provided in Calhoun County by HandsOn Battle Creek and supported by United Way. In addition, citizens wishing to volunteer to assist with clean-up efforts are encouraged to call 2-1-1. Citizens should consult with their insurance company for debris removal, as necessary.
The 2-1-1 service is a clearinghouse of nonprofit organizations and government agencies that are available by telephoning 2-1-1 or by visiting www.uwmich.org/2-1-1. Based on the type of assistance and services needed, 2-1-1 call specialists can help citizens acquire available resources, such as food and water, clothes, medication, debris removal, construction materials and appliances. 2-1-1 is a free community referral service available 24 hours a day with multilingual capabilities.
The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division is responsible for coordinating state and federal resources to assist local government in response and relief activities in the event of an emergency or disaster, as well as coordinating homeland security initiatives and various federal grants.
