LANSING. The Michigan State Police (MSP) confirmed today that preliminary reports indicate 13 people lost their lives in nine separate traffic crashes during the 2010 Labor Day holiday period. In comparison, 16 people died in traffic crashes during the 2009 Labor Day holiday period.
Of the 13 victims, it was found seven were not using any type of restraint, and alcohol was a known factor in two of the nine fatal crashes.
"These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported to the Michigan State Police as of 10 a.m. today," stated Capt. Monica L. Yesh, commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division. "The preliminary numbers show a decrease in fatalities from this same holiday period last year. The Michigan State Police continue to urge motorists to not drink and drive, wear their safety belts and drive safely."
The 2010 Labor Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, through midnight on Monday, Sept. 6, 2010.
