LANSING. At a special ceremony held in Lansing, Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue presented Tpr. Harold Terry (top photo) and Tpr. Kyle Kehn (bottom photo) of the Houghton Lake Post with the MSP Lifesaving Award.
On Jan. 8, 2011, Terry and Kehn responded to a call involving two men who had fallen through ice at Higgins Lake. Upon arrival, the troopers found the men a quarter mile apart and approximately 100 yards off shore. Going as far on the ice as safely possible, Terry pulled one of the men to safety while Kehn located the other man and pulled him to safety.
Once ashore, the troopers removed the men's clothing, wrapped them in emergency blankets and placed them in their patrol cars to keep them warm until emergency personnel arrived and transported them to the hospital.
In presenting Troopers Terry and Kehn with the MSP Lifesaving Award, the department recognizes that if it were not for their quick actions and training the victims may not have survived.
Kehn enlisted with the department in 2008, graduating as a member of the 121st Trooper Recruit School. He has served at the Houghton Lake Post since graduation.
Terry enlisted with the department in 1998, graduating as a member of the 116th Trooper Recruit School. Prior to serving at the Houghton Lake Post, he served at the Flint and Stephenson posts.
