Sands Promoted to State Police Deputy Director

LANSING, MICH. Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue is pleased to announce the promotion of Capt. Thomas Sands to lieutenant colonel and commander of the Field Services Bureau (FSB), effective Feb. 3.

In his new position, Sands will serve as one of the department's four deputy directors and as a member of the department's Executive Council. As deputy director of the FSB, Sands will provide executive direction and leadership to over 1,400 enlisted and civilian employees assigned to the department's seven districts, 29 posts, 22 multi-jurisdictional task forces and other special investigative teams.

Sands enlisted with the department in 1987, graduating as a member of the 102nd Trooper Recruit School. He has served as a trooper at the Grand Haven Post, detective trooper in the Criminal Investigation Division in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula and as a detective sergeant in the Technical Services Unit. He served as commander of the Security, Private Investigator and Tax Enforcement Section, Jackson Post, Fire Marshal Division Field Operations Section, Criminal Investigation Division Special Investigation Section, Brighton Post and the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division.

Sands is a graduate of Central Michigan University where he received a bachelor's degree in public administration. He is also a graduate of the 211th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.

Sands, a native of Ann Arbor, is married and has three children.
