    TPR. PAUL K. BUTTERFIELD II
    February 16, 1970 - September 9, 2013

    Tpr. Paul Butterfield II

Tpr. Paul Kenyon Butterfield II, age 43, began his career with the Michigan State Police (MSP) in 1999 as a member of the 118th Trooper Recruit School. Trooper Butterfield served 11 years at the Manistee Post before transferring to the Hart Post in 2011. He worked primarily out of the Pere Marquette Detachment and was well known in the community. He served as a defensive tactics instructor, evidence technician, and arson investigator. Trooper Butterfield was awarded a Unit Citation for a homicide investigation in 2004.

Prior to joining the MSP, Trooper Butterfield attended the University of Tennessee, where he was a star athlete in track.

Trooper Butterfield served in the United States (U.S.) Army from 1993 through 1996, and in the U.S. Army Reserve until 2001. During his military service, he received a Humanitarian Medal, Expeditionary Medal, and was named soldier of the year.

Trooper Butterfield's co-workers describe him as a very caring individual. One example includes his response to a domestic violence scene where both individuals were arrested. Before taking the people to jail, Trooper Butterfield made sure the individuals' cat had sufficient food and water.

Trooper Butterfield is preceded in death by his mother.

Trooper Butterfield was recently engaged to be married, with a tentative wedding date in October of 2014.
