State Police Participating in International Lifesaver Weekend

Contact: Sgt. Jill M. Bennett, MSP, Traffic Services Section, (517) 636-0087
Agency: State Police

Issued: Dec. 19, 2013

LANSING.  During this last full weekend before Christmas, the Michigan State Police (MSP) will join other state police and highway patrol agencies from across the United States in an effort to make travel safer by participating in the annual Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) Lifesaver Weekend. The purpose of this initiative is to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities resulting from crashes caused by dangerous driving behaviors.

"This weekend is typically a very busy travel period due to celebrations, shopping and other functions," stated Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP. "Troopers will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to impaired drivers and motorists who are exhibiting any unsafe driving practice, including not wearing their safety belt, running red lights and drowsy and distracted driving."

Operation C.A.R.E. Lifesaver Weekend begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013. Last year, five fatal traffic crashes resulted in five deaths over the Lifesaver Weekend. Alcohol use was a known factor in all five crashes and, of those who died, only one was known to have been wearing a safety belt.

Operation C.A.R.E. began in 1977 as a collaborative effort between the MSP and the Indiana State Police and is one of the nation's longest-running traffic safety initiatives. Today, it includes state and highway patrol agencies from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Quebec Police Force and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
