451 Motorists Arrested for Drunk Driving During Spring Crackdown

Contact: Lynn Sutfin, OHSP, (517) 241-1513
Agency: State Police

Law enforcement officers arrested 451 motorists for drunk driving during a three-week impaired driving crackdown March 12-April 7. Of those arrested, 85 were charged under the state’s high blood alcohol content (BAC) law with a BAC of .17 or higher.

This is a decrease from the 510 drunk driving arrests made during a similar enforcement effort in 2013. Officers from 26 counties conducted stepped up enforcement in March and early April resulting in more than 13,700 traffic stops and 7,957 citations and arrests, including 313 for other alcohol- and drug-related charges such as open intoxicants.

“Motorists were asked to catch a sober ride to get home safely. Those people who failed to heed that request are finding out how much a DUI can cost,” said Michael L. Prince, Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) director.

During the crackdown, troopers from the Michigan State Police Coldwater Post stopped motorists for traffic violations and discovered an open bottle of liquor and 20 grams of marijuana in one vehicle and that the driver of a another vehicle was driving with a forged registration plate, without insurance or a valid license and had an outstanding criminal bench warrant. Both drivers were arrested.

In Muskegon County’s Fruitport Township, officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and discovered heroin, cocaine, marijuana and $902. The vehicle’s two occupants were arrested for delivery of narcotics.

The effort was funded through federal highway safety grants and coordinated by OHSP. Other enforcement activity included:

• 1,192 speeding citations • 334 misdemeanor arrests
• 715 uninsured motorist citations • 325 fugitive arrests
• 626 suspended driver citations • 199 seat belt and child restraint citations
• 365 red light running citations • 40 felony arrests

Grant-funded counties included: Allegan, Berrien, Calhoun, Chippewa, Delta, Eaton, Genesee, Grand Traverse, Houghton, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Marquette, Monroe, Muskegon, Oakland, Ottawa, Saginaw, St. Clair, Van Buren, Washtenaw, Wayne and Wexford.
