State Police Trooper Receives Bravery Award

May 15, 2003

EAST LANSING. The Michigan State Police Board of Awards is pleased to announce that Trooper Kevin M. Marshall of the Newaygo Post has been awarded the Michigan State Police Bravery Award. He is credited with risking his life to protect the lives of others.

On August 25, 2002, Marshall responded to a call on an attempted suicide. A woman, who was reported to be bleeding heavily, had intentionally stepped in front of a moving semitrailer and then fled into a nearby house. Upon approaching the house, Marshall observed the woman standing in the kitchen, bleeding from her wrist and holding a large butcher knife.

From outside the house, Marshall saw the woman’s boyfriend grab her and begin to struggle with her as the woman attempted to stab him. Marshall entered the house and quickly jumped on both subjects and struggled for several minutes until successfully wrestling the knife from the woman. The boyfriend received knife wounds on his hands and bite marks on his shoulders as a result of the struggle. The woman continued to fight after being restrained and was eventually transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The Michigan State Police Board of Awards recognizes that without Marshall’s quick, selfless actions, this volatile situation may have ended in tragedy.

Marshall joined the department in 1995, and was a graduate of the 111th Recruit School. After graduation he was assigned to the Newaygo Post. Since 2002, Marshall has been a member of the MSP Emergency Support Team. Prior to joining the department, Marshall received a degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University.

A native of Sterling Heights, Marshall currently lives in Rockford with his wife, Angela, and their two children.
