MSP's Aviation Unit works closely with all Michigan law enforcement agencies, as well as the Michigan National Guard and the United States Coast Guard air stations.

The Aviation Unit has a fleet of aircraft based out of Lansing's Capital Region International Airport, with satellite offices in Saginaw and Ypsilanti. Aircraft include a Beech King Air 90, Cessna 182R, Bell 206L3, Bell 407GX, and three Aeryon SkyRanger Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs). Aviation also uses a downlink truck, which receives live video feeds from the helicopters or UAS, providing ground commanders with increased situational awareness of critical incidents.

Current personnel include four full-time pilots and three full-time tactical flight officers (TFOs), multiple part-time TFOs, two full-time civilian mechanics, and one full-time civilian scheduler to meet MSP's 24/7 operational needs.

Bell 407GX

Bell 407GX: This helicopter is primarily flown for patrol, search and rescue, traffic enforcement, border security, and marijuana eradication. The 407GX is equipped with:

  • Photo-mapping system
  • FLIR imaging system with infrared and regular camera modes
  • Spectrolab SX-16 searchlight
  • Side mount platforms for Emergency Support Team (EST)
  • LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System
  • Public Address System

Bell 206L3

Bell 206L3: This helicopter is primarily flown for patrol, search and rescue, traffic enforcement, border security, and marijuana eradication. The 206L3 is equipped with:

  • NiteSun 30 million candlepower searchlight
  • FLIR imaging system with infrared and regular camera modes
  • Public Address System

Aeryon SkyRanger UAS

Aeryon SkyRanger UAS: These aircraft are primarily used to photograph crash, crime, and fire scenes in order to assist investigators with incident mapping and in providing aerial photographs. Equipped with HD and IR cameras, the UAS can be deployed throughout the state. 

Beech King Air 90

Beech King Air 90: The King Air is flown primarily for prisoner extradition, tactical team transport, and VIP transport.
