18 Wheels and BUSted

 

Commercial motor vehicle regulations exist to ensure the safety of the motoring public. These regulations, state and federal, were enacted to ensure the trucking industry operates safely and have been enforced primarily by Michigan State Police motor carrier officers. As a result a "knowledge gap" of these regulations has been identified, impacting the enforcement efforts of enlisted members during large truck and bus traffic enforcement.

 

2015 MCOLES Speed Measurement Operator Recertification

 

Pursuant to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards requirement, speed measurement operators and instructors must be recertified every five years.  The Michigan State Police has developed an online training to recertify speed measurement operators, that is available free of charge to all law enforcement agencies.   The training consists of a series of 6 video segments, with test questions at the end of 5 of those segments.

 

Active Shooter Training

 

The City of Houston released a how-to video on surviving an active shooter event.  The video was created with funds from the Homeland Security Department.  Entitled "Run, Hide, Fight," the video depicts a fictional shooting at an office building.  

 

Alzheimer's Roll Call Training Videos

 

The IACP's Alzheimer's Initiatives training program has developed 4 short training videos which discuss various situations that law enforcement and first responders may encounter a person with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. 
Note:  This series is comprised of four separate videos.

 

BlueTeam - Incident Completion and Approval

 

This course provides an overview of the BlueTeam application and demonstrates how to enter Use of Force, Vehicle Accident, Vehicle Pursuit, and Complaint Against Member incidents.  Incident approval is also demonstrated.

Complex Coordinated Attack Vest (CCAV)

 

In order to prepare for the potential threat of domestic and international terrorism via complex coordinated attacks, the Michigan Department of State Police is issuing departmental members tactical ballistic plate carriers. These carriers, when worn in-conjunction with the current issue concealable soft armor, offer the user additional offensive and defensive capabilities during high risk situations.

 

Driving - Speed and Crashes

 

Inspector Tom Dirlam, MSP Field Services Bureau, hosted a "Lunch and Learn" on the topic of Speed and Crashes.

 

Drug and Alcohol Training for Supervisors - Reasonable Suspicion Testing

 

This training program will present details of the Michigan State Police drug and alcohol testing program.  We will discuss some basics of the program, offer definitions, and explain different types of testing done by the department.  The remainder of the training will provide information about the Reasonable Suspicion Testing program and what role you, as a supervisor, play in dealing with the employee before, during, and after a Reasonable Suspicion Test.  

 

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve

 

This 20-minute video was developed and distributed by the Department of Defense.  This video may be of value to line supervisors who have direct responsibility for managing employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserve.  It contains useful information on the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), the federal statute that covers the employment rights and responsibilities of military service members and their employers.    

 

Enforcing Laws for Bicyclists

 

Bicycle roll call video explaining the importance of safe bicycling produced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The video encourages law enforcement officers to take action and enforce traffic laws that apply to motorists and cyclists of all ages to enhance bicycle safety.

 

Enforcing Laws for Michigan Motorcyclists

 

Michigan-specific motorcycle roll call video that explains how the law enforcement community can help reduce motorcyclist deaths and injuries. The video will encourage law enforcement officers to take action for unendorsed riders, know the signs of a potentially impaired rider, and to be mindful of the dangers of excessive speed.

Naloxone Administration

 

PA 462 mandates that Peace Officers carrying and administering opioid antagonists must be trained in the proper administration of the drug and to recognize the symptoms of overdose. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​

 

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)

 

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed by Congress in 2003. The law created the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC) and charged it with developing standards for the elimination of sexual abuse in confinement settings. The final rule became effective August 20, 2012. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Skimmer Awareness

 

"Skimmer Awareness Training" is a brief overview of the growing problem of data theft at service station fuel pumps in Michigan. The training outlines the actions an initial investigator should take when responding to an incident.

 

Surviving an Active Shooter/Personal Safety

 

F/Lt. Brody Boucher, MSP Capitol Security Section, hosted a "Lunch and Learn" presentation on surviving an active shooter event.  This recorded presentation is approximately 30 minutes.

 

Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) Line Officer Training

 

This 15-minute video was developed to assist officers understand what kinds of suspicious behaviors are associated with pre-incident terrorism activities and how to document and report suspicious activity while protecting the privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties of individuals.  

 

The Slippery Slope: From Prescription Drugs to Heroin

 

During this 30-minute video, Dr. Corey Waller discusses the surge of heroin addiction in west Michigan and the treatment of addiction as a chronic medical condition. Dr. Waller is a board certified physician in both emergency and addiction medicine at Spectrum Health System.

 

Tobacco Tax Enforcement Assessment Training

 

The Michigan State Police, in cooperation with Michigan's Attorney General and the Department of Treasury, has a lead role in the Tobacco Tax Enforcement (TTE) initiative. This initiative is focused on impacting the multi-million dollar revenue loss to the state due to criminal activity regarding tobacco tax fraud.  Our mission is to encourage compliance by enhancing enforcement efforts and disrupting illegal trafficking of tobacco and cigarette products through inspections, assessments and prosecution.

 

Traffic Stops Involving Foreign Nationals
