Report Tips on Clandestine Labs or Methamphetamine

Clandestine Labs

1/866-METH-TIP

In 2002, 206 meth labs have been encountered in Michigan. Indicators of clandestine laboratory activity include the following:

  • Strong odor of chemicals in the area.
  • Complaints from neighbors about strange smells coming from the property.
  • Heavy fortification, such as bars on the windows.
  • Suspicious automobile traffic and visitors to the site.
  • Unusual hours of activity.
  • Chemical cans or drums in the yard.
  • People leaving the building to smoke.
  • Open windows in cold weather.

Only trained and DEA-certified clandestine lab personnel should enter a clandestine laboratory. If a lab is encountered, compliance with the following guidelines of chemical safety could prevent injury, illness, or even death:

  • Notify the fire department and the appropriate local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies, such as DEA.
  • Secure the area from a safe distance.
  • Use protective equipment such as gloves and protective masks while in the lab.
  • Do not turn any electrical switches on or off or unplug anything; these actions could trigger an explosion.
  • Exit the lab as soon as possible to limit exposure to hazardous materials and potentially explosive conditions.
