Getting on the road to a great career!

  • Tuition-paid, fast-track, customized training that provides women, minorities, and low-income individuals with the skills they need to enter and succeed in road construction apprenticeships.
  • Participants acquire employment skills and certification.
  • Apprenticeships open doors that lead to road construction careers as carpenters, cement masons, iron workers, laborers, operating engineers, and others.
  • Road construction jobs offer excellent pay and benefits, and advancement opportunities.

Features

  • Intensive, eight-week, six-hours-a-day training program
  • Student assistance and support
  • Michigan Works! assessment of skills and aptitude
  • Approved, local training providers (community colleges, trade unions, other training providers)
  • Assistance with seeking road construction apprenticeships

Eligibility

  • Minorities, women, or low-income individuals
  • 18 years of age, or older
  • High school diploma, or GED certificate
  • Pass an entrance assessment for reading, applied math, and locating information
  • Valid driver's license
  • Pass a physical exam and drug test

  • Career counseling and follow-up services

Customized Training

  • Provides 240 hours of training in job readiness skills, applied math, computers, blueprint reading, workplace safety and overview of construction trades
  • Brings math, reading, and locating information skills up to workplace standards
  • Develops skills employers are looking for now
  • Provides training through community colleges, trade unions, and others

Certification

Earned upon satisfactory completion of customized training

  • RCAR Program Completion Certificate
  • Gold, Silver,or Bronze WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate
  • CareerSafe (MIOSHA) Certificate
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate

Placement Assistance

  • RCAR certification shows worker qualifications and preparedness to start an apprenticeship program
  • RCAR participants will receive help with seeking placement into road construction apprenticeships throughout the state
