Preretirement Survivor Pension

Your retirement plan provides protection for your dependents if you die while an enlisted state police officer.

Eligibility and calculations depend on whether your death is considered duty or nonduty:

  • Duty Preretirement Survivor Pension. Your family may be eligible for pension benefits if you are killed in the line of duty, or die from injuries or an illness resulting from your occupation with the Michigan State Police.
  • Nonduty Preretirement Survivor Pension. Your family may be eligible for pension benefits if you were a deferred member or active member with 10 or more years of service credit, and you die before you are eligible to receive a pension.
