The Governor’s Office of Community and Faith-Based Initiatives will:
-
advise the Governor on opportunities to enlist the work of community and faith-based organizations that address social needs in Michigan, to enhance partnerships, and to replicate successful community and faith-based programs;
-
work closely with community and faith-based organizations to promote service activities and assist the organizations in identifying and applying for federal grants; and
-
identify, promote and share innovative and model community and faith-based programs, initiatives and best practices.
The new office will seek out grant opportunities at the federal level and through private sources to expand its work in the future. The office will be directed and staffed by Greg Roberts, who has coordinated the Governor’s community and faith-based outreach efforts since 2003.
The Office of Community and Faith-Based Initiatives will be a clearinghouse of information and opportunities that already exist in and outside of state government. The office offers Michigan a new framework for new partnerships that will help the state provide better services to more people.
The Office is focused solely on helping community organizations better the lives of citizens in local communities. It is prohibited from engaging in any activity that would violate constitutional protections for the freedom of religion and prohibitions on the government establishment of religion.
