Region One covers the entire Upper Peninsula, including the counties of Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette, Menominee, Ontonagon, and Schoolcraft.
Michigan's Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a large geographic area that encompasses 33 percent of the state's landmass with 16,452 square miles of mostly forested land owned by the federal and state governments. This large geographic area houses about 317,258 people or 3 percent of Michigan's population according to the 2000 census. The city of Marquette is the largest of its cities with just under 20,000 residents.
